5 Days of Hajj – Step-by-Step Guide with Masail (Islamic Rulings)
Hajj, the fifth pillar of Islam, is a once-in-a-lifetime obligation for Muslims who are physically and financially capable. The pilgrimage spans five crucial days during the Islamic month of Dhul-Hijjah. Each day carries specific rituals, spiritual significance, and Masail (Islamic rulings).
📅 Day 1 – 8th Dhul-Hijjah (Yawm at-Tarwiyah) – Mina
Description:
Pilgrims don the Ihram (sacred clothing) and make niyyah (intention) for Hajj.
After performing Fajr in Makkah, they proceed to Mina, a tent city located 8 km away.
In Mina, they perform Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha, and Fajr of the next day (shortened but not combined).
Masail (Rulings):
Ihram must be worn before leaving Makkah.
Combining prayers in Mina is not Sunnah; each Salah should be prayed at its prescribed time but shortened (Qasr) for non-residents.
Engaging in Dua, Dhikr, and Tilawah is highly recommended.
📅 Day 2 – 9th Dhul-Hijjah (Yawm ‘Arafah) – Arafah
Description:
After Fajr in Mina, pilgrims proceed to Arafah.
The most important ritual: Wuquf (standing) at Arafah, from Dhuhr until Maghrib.
Khutbah and combined Dhuhr and Asr prayers are performed.
After sunset, pilgrims leave for Muzdalifah without praying Maghrib.
Masail:
Staying in Arafah is the essential pillar of Hajj; missing it invalidates Hajj.
Combined and shortened Dhuhr + Asr prayer should be offered at Masjid Namirah (or the tent area).
Leaving before sunset from Arafah is not permitted without valid excuse.
📅 Day 3 – 10th Dhul-Hijjah (Yawm an-Nahr) – Muzdalifah, Mina, Jamaraat, Sacrifice, Tawaf
Description:
Pilgrims pray Maghrib + Isha combined in Muzdalifah, stay overnight.
After Fajr, they collect pebbles (70 small stones) and proceed to Mina.
Perform Rami al-Jamarah al-Kubra (Big Jamarah) – stoning the devil.
Qurbani (sacrifice) of an animal follows.

Masail:
Rami before Zawal is not valid.
Order of stoning must be followed: Sughra → Wusta → Kubra.
Making Dua after Sughra and Wusta is Sunnah; no Dua after Kubra.
📅 Day 5 – 12th Dhul-Hijjah (Optionally 13th)
Description:
Repeat the stoning ritual at all three Jamaraat after Zawal.
Pilgrims may leave Mina after stoning if they wish (this is called Nafr-e-Awwal).
Staying for the 13th Dhul-Hijjah and performing Rami again is optional but Sunnah.
Masail:
If you remain for the 13th, stoning all three Jamaraat is Wajib again.
Leaving Mina before Maghrib on the 12th allows skipping the 13th’s Rami.
Deliberate delay beyond 13th without excuse is Makruh.
